WHO Study – mobile phones "possibly carcinogenic to humans"

Another study, this time from the prestigious World Health Organisation (WHO), suggesting that mobile (cell) phones pose a cancer risk.

Perhaps the most interesting point (at the end of the podcast) is that 3G phones result in less absorbed radiation than GSM.

What to do?  HHG2Tech's advice is to take a risk management approach.  What does this mean?  Risk management is what you do when you wear a seat belt.  Risk of an accident is real, but small, so you take the no-cost risk management option.

Risk management with a mobile phone means keeping it as far as possible from your body & particularly the head.  All forms of electromagnetic radiation obey the inverse square law – double the distance, one quarter the energy.
  • reduce mobile use.  In the WHO study, 30 minutes per day is regarded as heavy use.
  • use speaker – HHG2Tech has reported previously that a majority of brain surgeons use speaker phone mode.
  • get the phone out of your pocket – hand bag, back pack or on the desk.
  • use SMS.

      Some less certain measures:
      • wired head set – it has been suggested that the wire will conduct radiation directly to the head.
      • Bluetooth head set – Bluetooth is a radio frequency technology, although at a lower energy level than the phone itself (10 metre range verses kilometers).
